Starlight Engine Secures ¥6.06 Billion in Inaugural External Funding to Accelerate Nuclear Fusion Commercialization
Tokyo-based fusion energy startup Starlight Engine has successfully raised 6.06 billion yen in its first external funding round via a third-party allotment of shares. The capital injection is designed to accelerate the company’s “FAST” (Fusion by Advanced Superconducting Tokamak) project, which targets the demonstration of fusion energy power generation in the 2030s.

Capital Allocation Strategy
Starlight Engine, established in April 2025 as a group company of Kyoto Fusioneering, intends to use the newly acquired capital to transition the FAST project from conceptual design to engineering design and construction preparation. Specifically, management has outlined the following capital allocation priorities:
Accelerating investments in engineering design and technological R&D with a focus on actual plant construction.
Expanding joint research initiatives and strategic partnerships.
Addressing site selection and regulatory compliance while establishing a robust supply chain.
Scaling human resources and organizational infrastructure, with targeted hiring plans to expand the team to approximately 200 employees over the next two years.
Strategic Context and Industry Outlook
This capital raise occurs against the backdrop of intensifying global competition—particularly in the U.S. and China—to demonstrate and commercialize fusion energy. Domestically, the Japanese government has positioned fusion power demonstration in the 2030s as a national strategy, providing policy tailwinds to transition the sector from R&D to commercial viability.
Starlight Engine’s FAST project utilizes a Tokamak design, which is the most heavily researched confinement method globally, allowing for manageable cost and technology risk. The initiative leverages decades of historical data from the International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor (ITER) and the Japan-Europe joint project “JT-60SA”.
The project represents a substantial industry-academia collaboration. Starlight Engine is conducting joint research with major academic institutions including the University of Tokyo, Tohoku University, Nagoya University, Kyoto University, Kyushu University, and Keio University. Additionally, the project is backed by numerous corporate partners outside of this funding round, including Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corporation, J-Power, JGC Corporation, Hitachi, Marubeni, Kajima Corporation, Kyocera, Mitsui & Co., and Mitsubishi Corporation.

Starlight Engine CEO Kiyotaka Kikuchi noted that realizing fusion energy requires a collective effort across industries, academia, and government. He interpreted the strong backing from major institutional and corporate investors, secured barely a year after the company’s inception, as a robust mandate for the company’s vision and execution capabilities in the race to deliver commercial fusion power.
